On the Mats: Successful Business Ideas Instead of Following the Shiny Things
Do you love all those new, brand-new shiny things out in the marketplace, and you go, ‘This is going to be great for my business!’ so off you go and buy them, and then all of a sudden you sort of like lose interest a couple of months later and then you’re off to the next shiny thing? Well, guys, let me show you how that is really killing your business…
So let’s have a look at an example: So many companies are out there, looking for that next shiny thing, hoping that that next marketing tool out there is going to get them more leads, hoping that their next accountant is going to give them the right answers and be able to make their profit bigger. Well, we’ve got a customer who has been in business for quite a long time – over 15 years – and you know what? They never got caught up in the shiny things. They’ve been doing the same thing over and over and over and over again. They haven’t modified their marketing campaigns. They haven’t changed much at all. Yes, they have added a website in that time, but their website doesn’t do anything for them apart from show information. They haven’t gone and changed anything – because, you know what?
They stuck to what actually worked; they stuck to what…at the beginning they said, ‘we’re going to do this to grow our customers’ – by building strategic alliances.
They’ve gone, ‘All I’m going to do is build strategic alliances’ and 15 years later the company is huge; it’s massive. They didn’t digress; they didn’t look for the next shiny thing. This is what business owners need to actually work on: find something that just works and then just plug away at it, keep going at it. You know, we look at some of the On the Mats episodes that we’ve done – Delayed Gratification – you know, you’ve got to take time to get the results that you’re looking for, and also over-educating yourself, looking at all those new shiny things. Well, don’t. You know what? Find that shiny thing that looks shiny and then just plug away for 2 years at it. Watch the results you’re going to get.
3 Quick Tips for a Successful Business
1 – Step 1: what you want to do is find what your best product is, what’s the easiest to sell, and who buys more of it. And then, guess what? Try and actually expand that campaign, because if it’s the highest margin selling product, and it’s easy to market and a lot of people are currently buying it, well – focus on just getting that product out there. Don’t try and introduce new products to your business offerings, because reality is, you won’t have time to focus on all of them. Focus on what’s actually working now, the products that are working.
2 – Second point is: you can’t be everything for everyone, so just focus on what you’re good at. Don’t try and customize a package or a service for a particular customer because you’re going to do it for the rest of them and you’re going to run out of time. Package your solution and just use that solution – absolutely easiest way to actually just continually grow the business, plus it helps you grow a business that works without you. So this is a very good key; if you can get a duplicate product that you can just get out there and sell, it makes life easier for you.
3 – And the last tip is: the more focused you become on one particular product, one particular strategy, the more effective you become. The more effective your business becomes, the better you get at what you’re actually doing, and the easier that everything works altogether. Guys, business should be boring. Reality is, it’s doing the same thing over and over and over again multiple times. That’s what business should be all about; it shouldn’t be that exciting.
So guys, are you looking for that next shiny thing or can you get a focus in your business where you can just focus on it and just go out and smash it to the marketplace?
So, that’s it for me. Guys – don’t forget: my passion is business, my message is global, and I’m an Aussie. Have a great day, guys!
