On the Mats: Maximum Motivation
Have you reached your maximum motivation level in business? Well, come and find out about what we’re talking about.
Hi all, Nathan McDonald from Black Belt Business for another excellent On the Mats episode and just quickly, guys, why do we call it ‘On the Mats’? Well, when I train in martial arts, I talk to students about ‘looking forward to seeing you on the mats’, and this is about getting in and getting changes done or training in martial arts and also getting things done in your business. So, that’s why we call it On the Mats. And guys, this is about being business on the mats, and the key thing I’m going to talk to you today about is motivation and your maximum motivation. Have you reached your maximum motivation in business?
Now let me give you a quick story on what I mean by that. I was speaking to a client earlier on, and I turned around and I said, ‘So what motivates you to do what you do? What gets you out of bed every morning?’ and he turned around and he’s gone, ‘Well, quite simply, I’ve got some team members and I love providing team members their wages so they can live in life and I just want a comfortable living.’ And I said, ‘Well, that’s great, and you also want a booming business and want to continue your business growing?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh yeah, that would be ok’.
And it’s like, well, ok. So, reality is you’re going to have a boom in business because you don’t have the motivation. You know why? Because he’s already doing that at the moment, he’s hit his maximum motivation level. He is not there going, ‘I am super excited about doubling my business, or tripling my business’ or having a business that runs without him. He has literally sat at that maximum motivation level and reality is that the business might grow slowly, but he won’t have the motivation and the drive to actually grow it quicker than what he possibly could.
So my question to you is: Have you reached your maximum motivation level? And if you have, what are you going to do to change that? What is it that you need to go, ‘Right, my motivation level is here, what do I need to do to take my motivation level to there? What is that’s going to drive you actually, take you to the next spot? And it’s really funny, most people’s motivation comes from within or from a…from pain. A lot of people prefer not to have pain so that’s their motivator rather than actually having a goal out there and going ‘Yeah, I’d love to have business that runs without me, but that’s ok, because I’m quite happy where I am at the moment’. But if all of a sudden business goes down and you’re not providing an income or you can’t provide for yourself or your family, there’s pain there: Bang! There’s so much motivation you’ve got to get back into it.
I’m going to question you on: what are you going to do to change? And this isn’t an easy question; everyone is going to be individual on how to do it, but what is it that you’re going to do to increase your maximum motivation? And I’ll give you a really good tip that I use. I find what I’m extremely motivated about, and I find a picture – roughly about this big and I stick it on my monitor and every time I sit down and go ‘Oh my goodness, I’ve got to do this’, I look at that picture and go, ‘Yep, now I know why I’ve got to do this, now I know why I’m here, now I know why I get out of bed every morning and work on what I need to work on’. And reality is, yes, I can get a buzz out of watching clients grow; though, what is my motivation to actually grow my business if I’m comfortable now and I just enjoy my days and work, you know, X amount of hours and whatever, and if I’m enjoying that I’ve got that next motivation step.
Well, you know what guys? Find that motivation step, put it up there and watch what will happen to your business, watch how much easier to do that job that you just really don’t want to do and you’re procrastinating about, and watch what will happen, and you’ll get it done and your business will actually go somewhere quite quicker than what you’re expecting.
So guys, go and find out what your maximum motivation is and try and increase that. I’m sure your business will be grateful for it, and if you do need a hand finding it, we have some great tools at Black Belt Business here to help you get to that maximum motivation level or increase it, and show you some really good ways to actually grow your business.
