On the Mats: Is your health affecting your business?
Is being unhealthy – personally – affecting your business? Let’s go and find out…
Hello everyone, Nathan McDonald here, Chief Business Instructor for another wonderful ‘On the Mats’ episode – and this one is extremely close to my heart. And what we’re going to talk about is you being unhealthy in personal life – does that affect your business? And, I guess, put your hand up or say, ‘Yea’ if it does or ‘No, there’s no direct correlation’.
Well, guys, I want to share with you a couple of stories: my own personal one and also a client’s one, how they do interact. And when…before I became a business instructor, my business prior to this – one of the things was…is…I was very unhealthy, I was nowhere near looking like you can see on the screen here. And I was just unhealthy; I was working myself into the ground, eating a lot of junk food, and I just wasn’t healthy. Yeah, I was still training in martial arts, but I wasn’t healthy. And it wasn’t until I started to train for the Noosa Triathlon that all of a sudden I saw some direct results happening to my business: my business started to grow, I was happier, I felt better, and that impacted on my business and off it went. And is this what’s happening with you? Are you running around, running yourself into the ground and being unhealthy outside of your business, and how is that affecting your business? Is it…are you feeling that you’ve got to be continually running around doing stuff for your business and not focusing on yourself and letting yourself go? And that’s one of the biggest dangers that you can have, because there is a direct correlation on how healthy you are and how healthy your business is. And I’m going to take you through that in a second.
One of the other things I’ve worked with a client on is when I started working with them one of their goals was to be healthier – healthier in life and healthier in business. And the business side was great, but the first thing we worked on was getting them into a routine of exercise. And what happened? Within 6 months of a good solid routine of exercise the business had almost doubled. And do we direct it to that exercise? Absolutely, because the client was able to do more: they were able to think better, they were able to reduce their stress – and these are all things that exercise actually does.
So I want to take you through a formula just really quickly about your lifestyle and a business lifestyle, and this is a formula that we use at the Black Belt Business group of companies to really help grow businesses. And let’s have a look at a business: it can only provide you 2 tangible results and 2 only. What are they? Well, the first one is money. Of course, your business can provide you money. Now these are tangible, these aren’t ‘Oh, my business makes me feel good’. How do you measure that? How can you go up to someone and say, ‘Right, I measure my business on how good I feel’? No, you can measure your business on how much money you make – you can clearly see that. But also time – how much time you’re spending in the business. And these are the 2 tangible results of business. But reality is the additional part to the formula that we hear at the Black Belt group is, of course, your health – how healthy you are.
So if we have a look at the nice simple formula:
MONEY X YOUR TIME X YOUR HEALTH
= THAT SHOULD BE PROVIDING YOU THE LIFESTYLE
And part of business and being part in business, you need to work on all 3 of them. How much time am I spending? What have I got to do to reduce my hours so I don’t have to spend multiple hours? What do I need to do to increase my money? And of course: what do I need to do to make sure I stay healthy? Because I’ve seen a lot of people with a lot of money and no time and no health, and they do not have a very good existence. And vice versa: I’ve seen people that are extremely healthy and spend all of their time exercising and running and eating healthy but have no money and time. And also, I have a lot of people with no money and a lot of time, and not healthy as well. So, how do you get a balance between them? And that’s the question I’m going to ask you now: What have you got to do to start getting a balance on increase your money for your business, how you can reduce your working hours, and how do you become healthy so you can have the best lifestyle possible? And that’s really what we do at the Black Belt group of companies here: Black Belt Business, Black Belt Results – all of the different companies – we use this formula to ensure that you have the best business running.
So, guys, what are the benefits about being healthy? Well, of course, the healthier you are, the healthier your business is. It helps you reduce stress, it helps fatigue – reducing fatigue, it helps you think clearer – you can make decisions a lot quicker and a lot better. You…You’re happier; you really are happier. And it’s harder to get stressed. And it just is a very good mental…exercise is very good mentally. This is just proven; I don’t have to go and prove any stats to you, just go and do the research yourself.
So, I’m going to challenge you guys right now: I want to challenge you to go out there and start getting healthy – healthy not just for you, your family, but also for your business – and watch the results happen. That alone will actually help your business, because you…again, you can focus better, you’ve got more energy, you can just get out there. So, guys, I want you to go and get healthy – healthy personally, which will then give you a healthy business as well. Does it take time? Absolutely. Do you have to be consistent? Yes, you do. But, you know what guys? Go and do it. Stop eating food on the run, go and pack your lunch, go and spend the time to be healthy, get up and go for a run at lunchtime. Go, get up earlier and go for a run in the morning. It’s funny; the biggest CEOs in the world, you know what? The first thing they do is they don’t get up and check their emails or do any work; most of them – they’ve done surveys on this – most of them have got up and gone for a run in the morning, and this is what they do to keep themselves fresh.
So, guys, here’s the challenge: Go and do that. ‘The Path to Business Mastery Course’ that we always talk about is what we mainly work with business owners working on – and, that is to help with the time and the money side. The health side you guys have to do for yourself. So go get that motivation. Go out and smash it; become a healthy business owner, and watch what’s going to make it.
