On the Mats: Delayed Gratification
Do you believe your business should be out there smashing it and you’ve only been in business for a short time? Well, guys, let’s go and find out a bit of reality.
Hi all, Nathan McDonald, Chief Business Instructor here for another awesome ‘On the Mats’ episode. Today we’re going to talk about that wonderful little term called delayed gratification. I don’t know if you’ve heard about that, but it was really interesting: last Friday I had a very, very successful business owner talk in front of 43 business owners. And there was something that really radiated with it, and really radiated with me, which is why I’m sharing this topic. And the point is that it took him 20 years to get where he got to – not 20 days, not 20 minutes, not 20 months – 20 years. And one of the participants come up to me and goes, ‘Oh, these look like highly successful business people’ – which they were, reasonably successful – but he asked, ‘How many people are millionaires in there, in the room?’ And I went, ‘Hmm, interesting question…Hang on, let me go and find out…Great, there’s two.’ And one of the things that sort of affected me or affected that point was really simple: Both of them had been in business for over 15 years to actually get to that point. Now, I’m not saying you can’t get there quicker; what I’m trying to say is it takes a lot of hard work and time to actually get where you need to in business, to have that successful ‘lifestyle’ and what you define ‘success’. But reality is, we want to look at what business really is all about – and that’s, you know, effectively making cash and getting you time; not you buying a job. So, effectively, look at the time it took.
Now, let’s have another quick example. Look at Facebook. Facebook is a purely good example. Most people got onto Facebook in 2008, 2009, 2010 when it really started to take its…to really get out there. But Facebook started in 2003, so there was a 7-year period where it actually had to take off and really get out to the mass market. Are you trying to get your business to a point where you go, ‘Oh, I’ve just done this marketing campaign and nothing’s working’? But, reality is, it’s going to take awhile; it’s going to take a lot of hard work, it’s going to take a lot of determination and a lot of discipline to get your business where it is.
So guys, I want you to practice delayed gratification. It may take awhile to get where you need to in business. Yes, we can speed it up here at Black Belt Business, but it will take awhile to get the traction it actually needs. So guys, delayed gratification is the message of the day.
