On the Mats: Which Comes First – Sales or Marketing?
So I’ve got a great chicken-and-egg question for business: What comes first – marketing or sales? Let’s go and find out…
Hi guys, Nathan McDonald here from Black Belt Business, and today we’re going to discuss: what comes first – sales or marketing? You know, we’ve got that old age question: what comes first – the chicken or the egg? Well, this is very, very similar. What should you be doing more of? Should you be doing more of marketing? Should you be doing more of sales? What do you need to do right now? Is it both? Is it marketing or is it sales – or is it sales or is it marketing? Maybe I’m getting a bit confused myself here. No, I’m not, guys. I’m going to show you what you should be doing right now in your business in regards to marketing and sales.
1. Am I Converting Sales?
So the first thing we need to look at: one thing I find that business owners do is they go, ‘Right, I need more customers; we don’t have enough customers, so I’d better go and find some more customers’. Well, that’s great, guys, but one of the first things that we do working with clients is we actually ask the question: what are your sales like? You know, are you getting leads in but are those leads being converted? And I honestly believe that if you’ve got an established business, the first thing that you should be looking at is getting the sales first, and being able to convert the leads that you’ve actually got. It’s so often that I walk into a business and they go, ‘Oh, I need your help with marketing; we need to really get out there and get some marketing.’ And, you know, that’s great, but what happens if you’re losing most of those leads? That’s just wasted money. So the first thing that we need to look at is your sales: how many people are you converting? How many sales are you actually making out of the leads you’re currently already getting? So one of the first questions that you need to ask yourself is: am I converting correctly – am I making the sales that I need to? Again, I hate business owners wasting so much money on marketing, getting all these leads, and the reality is they’re not converting them. So the first thing that you need to have a look at is: do I have a very good sales process?
2. Cost Effective Marketing
The second thing we need to look at is – you may not be getting any leads at all to actually use your sales process. So now we’ve got to have a look at marketing. Marketing should be inexpensive, guys. If you’re a small business – and let’s say you’re by-yourself in your business – your marketing shouldn’t be that expensive; it should only cost you time. Now again, we’ve got to actually invest the time to get the leads to then be able to have money to spend on marketing – that you don’t have to be doing yourself. So you’ve got to have a look at marketing inexpensively, and you know what guys? It’s – reality is – it’s just getting out there: sending out emails, sending out newsletters, doing video blogs like I’m doing now, getting out to your target audience, investing a tiny bit of money into your website, making sure that can be found, hitting networking events. Again, these are very cost-effective marketing tools and they do have a good return – it just costs you time. So you invest more time into your marketing before you can then have a bigger budget for your marketing and really get out there.
3. Grow Marketing and Sales Together
So the last thing that I want to talk to you about – and this boils back down to what comes first, marketing or sales – is: reality is, I believe it should be both. Guys, start your networking events to build the experience up on what people are looking at. Get out there, find out who your target market is, find out who all of your niche is, and then fix your sales process – have a look at your sales process.
And I know here at Black Belt Business we’ve got one of the best sales processes – a 5-step process that works for literally 99% of customers out there, and you know, it just works, guys. So if you want help with that sales process, give us a call – we’re more than happy to help – but again, be careful; don’t go invest a whole heap of money in marketing, don’t go and throw your money out the window.
What comes first – the chicken or the egg – or marketing or sales? Well, reality is, I honestly believe sales: get your sales right -then get across to marketing. And in the next video blog I’m going to talk to you about: what is, really, marketing and what are the 3 key steps for your marketing plan, and what should you be doing to actually get that? So there are a couple of key points on the next video.
