On the Mats: Procrastination
So, do you find out you procrastinate way too much in your business? Well, come and find out how you can stop it…
Hi all, Nathan McDonald here for another excellent ‘On the Mats’ episode, and today we’re going to talk about procrastination. And did I take awhile to do this video? Did I procrastinate about it? Was I humming and hawing on ‘what I should say?’ and ‘what should I do?’ Ahh, the joys of procrastination, and guys, you may be doing this in your business as well. You may be putting off the stuff that you really know you should be doing but you’re not.
So, how do we stop procrastination? Well, reality is, it’s impossible; we’ll never be able to stop it. It just doesn’t happen that way, you know? You just can’t turn it off; we’re always going to avoid some of the stuff that we want to do, but the first tip that you want to do is be aware of it. Be aware you’re procrastinating about it; that’s the biggest thing that you can do. Be aware, and what we can do from there is, once you’re aware about it then you can do the next step.
And what the next step is, is put a deadline or consequence – or both – for that task that you’ve been avoiding. So if you’ve got a task that you need to do – ‘Task X’ – sit there and go, ‘Right, in my diary I’m going to put it in there and if I don’t get it done by that date, I’m going to have this awful consequence’. And reality is that normally helps with procrastination. I know most of you guys out there will probably leave things till the last minute, and you know that you’ll get it done if you’ve got a deadline. So put a deadline in; that really does help with procrastination.
The third point with procrastination is: put a 10-minute rule in place. This is like the episode that I did a while ago where I talked about just getting in and getting it done. Like if you ever didn’t want to go to a party, and then all of a sudden you’ve got there and you’ve had the best time ever. Well, procrastination is like that – just start it, use the 10-minute rule. Start something for 10 minutes and you’ll find it probably won’t be as daunting as what you’re expecting. And then 10 minutes normally turns into 2 hours, and the next thing you know, you may have that task already done.
So, guys, procrastination – you’re never going to get rid of it, but you can definitely manage it. So guys, that’s it for me today for another ‘On the Mats’ episode.
