On the Mats: Over-Servicing
Could having great customer service in your business be making you really struggle – one, financially and with time? Come and find out, guys…
Hi all, Nathan McDonald here again for another ‘On the Mats’ episode, and this one’s very close to my heart. I love my time management – well, self-management, if you’ve done all the research and you’ve done our programs – though I love the ability to get more time back in your business.
And this is a very important topic that I want to talk to you about today. Why is that? Over-servicing; can you be over-servicing in your business? And I want you to have a look at a quick analogy: If you had a 5-star hotel, and you went to go and stay at a 5-star hotel, you’d expect to pay 5-star hotel rates, wouldn’t you? It’s way more expensive – 3 to 4 times the amount. But what we find is, out there in the marketplace, businesses are actually giving 5-star service but only charging 2-star rates. And then they wonder why they’ve got not time or they’ve got no money – because effectively what they do is they believe they’ve got the best customer service out there. And you know what? That’s great to have all of that great customer service. And it’s interesting: I ask people all the time what makes them unique to their competition. Guess what they say? Their customer service – but reality is, it’s not on their marketing material, it’s not out there on their website, they’re not promoting themselves as a #1 customer-service-focused-orientated product/industry/whatever. Right? They’re not doing that. You’ve got to have a look at: are you over-servicing your customers, because if you’re over-servicing, you should have all these raving fans talking about your business every 5 minutes, and if you are, great. Are you turning that into new customers? You’ve got to really have a look about setting your servicing up so it’s like a machine: it’s a system; it just works, and it saves you time. Reality is – have a look at whether over-servicing is causing a challenge with your time and your finances in your business, because what you’ll find is it probably is, and then you are able to make changes to adapt them.
