On the Mats: Do you always get overwhelmed in your business?
Are you constantly getting overwhelmed with your workload and you find you just can’t get through it, and it’s just driving you nuts? Well, stay tuned; I’m here to help you out. Hi, my name is Nathan McDonald, and welcome to another awesome ‘On the Mats’ episode. Today we’re going to talk about overwhelm, and most business owners sometimes get overwhelmed – they may a lot get overwhelmed – but what does that really mean? Is it meaning that they’ve got way too much work on, or everything’s building up, or there could be no cash, or there’s no time, and they’ve got all these stresses that just keep pounding down and you just…it just keeps adding and adding and adding – and sooner or later it’s just ‘ARGH!’ break. [0:53] Now reality is, when you get into overwhelm, one of the first things I…I teach people – or teach business owners – is to stop. Take a deep breath. That would be the first point that I teach people. [1:05] The second point is, that what I would ask – it’s really simple – I do have business owners ringing me up going, ‘Oh, I’m just overwhelmed. I don’t know what to do first. I’ve got this and I’ve got that and I’ve got this.’ Well, reality is, the first thing I ask them – I say, ‘You’re a bit overwhelmed, aren’t you?’ and they go, ‘Yeah’ and I go, ‘Right. Where’s your to-do list? Show me your to-do list. What have you got there and where is it written down?’ And they go, ‘Oh, I don’t have a to-do list’. Ah, funny that. So, the second thing you want to do is write everything down that you’ve got outstanding. Whack it on a whiteboard, whack it on a bit of paper, have it on your to-do list. You know what? You may look at that to-do list and go, ‘Wow, there’s a lot there to do.’ But reality is, it’s now out of the head; it’s now gone – vroom – it’s out there; you’ve now got it sitting there. And then all of a sudden, you can take a deep breath and now prioritize. [1:54] And the third thing I work on with business owners to help with their overwhelm is: go out for a walk. Just stop what you’re doing. Know that you’re overwhelmed; you’ve got your to-do list written down. Go out for a walk, go out for a run, go do a bit of exercise. Take a break for half an hour. What that will do is that will get you reset and give you the ability to think while you’re out walking: ‘Well, actually this is the biggest priority. I’ve now got it out of my head; what do I need to work on then?’ And then that, I always find, will help business owners with overwhelm. So guys, don’t get overwhelmed. Take those 3 basic steps, go implement them, and watch what’s going to happen to your business. And guys, if you do need any more help than that, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
